Flowsicka: "I Just Want In!"

Let's hop right into your latest single, "Murder (Grindin' Remix)" -- Tell me about this track? How did it come to fruition?

I was actually listening to another beat and came up with the hook; I thought it was catchy, so I saved it to my notes...It wasn't until a couple days after, that I wrote the verses when I came across the Lil Wayne "Grindin'" beat.

What prompted your decision to "remake" or put your own spin on this popular YMCMB song?

At first, I had no intentions on remaking the popular YMCMB song; I just happened to stumble across the instrumental on Spinrilla. I kept playing it, and started reciting the hook I came up with a few days prior, and it went perfect. I started writing the verses; it just flowed, so I rolled with it.

Who have been your greatest inspirations musically and why?

My greatest inspiration musically has to be HOV! I love how he came from nothing and made it into to something, even when no one wanted to give him a shot. He paved his own way and made himself a BOSS; I think he's a genius musically and in a business sense!

Reflecting, how did you first discover your musical talent?

I started with music at an early age, but I realized when I was around 16 that I could really do something with it...So I started recording and doing little mix-tapes.

How would you describe and/or define the style of music that you create and perform?

My style of music is just crazy, full of energy. I'm versatile, I can ride any beat; I don't think it's a beat that I can't murder! My style is confidence. I feel like if giving the opportunity, I can stand toe to toe with the best of them!

Where does your moniker originally derive from?

When people started to hear my music, everybody use to say, "Shorty got a sick flow!" I was on the Internet one day and seen this song by Bathgate called "Flowsicka"...I didn't even listen to the song, that name just stuck in my head! I knew that was the name I was rollin' with; it was just catchy.

What do you feel you offer the music industry that we don't already have in other performers?

I feel like I offer that raw energy...I'm not afraid to take chances, and I'm not afraid to be myself. I can attack any beat; I'm versatile and I don't really sound like nobody...I got a fresh sound

Have you encountered any problems in getting to this point in your career?

Of course! Just like many unsigned artists, I have been through my fair share of BS. I had a song called "F.Y.M" I talked about it in the XXL article. I don't (know) if a certain industry rapper heard my version or not, but it sure did seem that way because his joint sounded exactly like mine; from the beat to the hook! I feel like I was copied without credit.

What do you want people to get from your music?

I want people to hear my music and think, "Damn, this chick is spittin' better than some of these dudes out here!" I want to make you feel my energy through my music.

Longevity, what do you feel has been the ultimate key to your success thus far? And, of course, what will continue to sustain you in this grueling business of music?

Just staying relevant and always working on my craft; making sure I get better each year.

Do you have any other outside/additional aspirations, maybe even completely away from music?

I have a heavy liking to fashion -- I just like putting things together -- I want to design my own line.

On a more serious note, are you happy with the current state of Hip Hop music? And, even more specifically, women in rap, or the lack thereof?

It's a lot of good things happening in Hip Hop; you got your positives and your negatives. I just want in! I don't think it's enough women out there doing their thing; I feel like there should be more opportunities for female emcees. Often times we get overlooked because it's a male dominated industry.

If you could collaborate with any one artist, living or dead, who would it be and why?

If I could collab with any one artist, it would be Jay-Z because he's the greatest living -- in my opinion -- and I would like to exchange bars with him on a beat to show ni99az if I can flow with HOV, I can flow with anybody!

If you could play any venue in the world, which one would you choose and why?

If I could play any venue in the world, it would have to be Madison Square Garden. So many greats have touched that stage. I would be honored to do my thing out there; the energy out there is crazy.

One track of yours that you think defines you and why?

If I had to pick one track that would describe (me), it would be "F.Y.M" because I'm letting you know I don't care what nobody say; I'm doing my thing and nobody will stop me.

Any "parting" word(s) for our readers?

Shoutout to my team, No Sleep Ent. -- Check out my music page: and "F.Y.M" on iTunes!!
