Virginia Tech was the recipient of one of the most surprising at-large picks ever by the BCS. Virginia benefited from that.
At the end of the night, both schools found themselves in a higher bowl than they had imagined hours earlier.
The Hokies will play in the Sugar Bowl on Jan. 3, facing off against Michigan. This is the first time that two ACC schools have been invited to BCS games - Clemson got an automatic spot in the Orange Bowl as the conference champion.
After a blowout loss Saturday, Virginia Tech seemed destined for a dramatic drop in the polls. Instead, they stayed high enough that the Sugar Bowl was able to select the Hokies.
Instead of throwing the whole system into chaos, the Chick-fil-A Bowl skipped over the closer geographic teams - Georgia Tech and Florida State - to give the nod to Virginia. The Cavaliers will face Auburn in the Chick-fil-A Bowl on Dec. 31.
